ST0007 Calcium (Ca) Sputtering Target

Catalog No. ST0007
Composition Ca
CAS Number 7440-70-2
Purity ≥99% (99.5% / 99.9% available)
Shape Discs, or Custom-made
Diameter 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", or customized
Thickness 0.25", 0.125", or customized
Bond Type Copper, or customized
Synonyms Calcium Sputtering Target, Ca Target, High Purity Calcium Target

Calcium (Ca) sputtering targets from Stanford Advanced Materials. Used for magnesium alloy additive research, hydrogen storage materials, biodegradable coatings, and superconducting thin film studies. Calcium is highly reactive in air — our targets are processed and vacuum-sealed in argon atmosphere to prevent oxidation before use. Standard discs from 2" to 6", or custom sizes.

FAQ

Q: Why is calcium sputtering target packaged in argon?

A: Calcium is highly reactive — it oxidizes within minutes when exposed to air. We process all calcium targets under inert atmosphere and seal them in argon-filled bags. Keep sealed until you're ready to install the target in your sputtering chamber.

Q: What happens if my calcium target gets oxidized before use?

A: Surface oxidation is normal for calcium exposed to air. A brief pre-sputtering burn-in (10-15 minutes at low power) typically removes the oxide layer. For heavily oxidized targets, the sputtering rate may be slower initially.

Q: Should I use DC or RF sputtering for calcium?

A: Calcium is conductive (resistivity 3.4 µΩ·cm), so DC sputtering works well. RF is also acceptable but not necessary.

Q: Do calcium targets need bonding?

A: Yes, bonding is recommended. Calcium is soft and has moderate thermal conductivity. Bonding to a copper backing plate improves thermal management, especially for higher power sputtering.

Q: What purity calcium target do I need?

A: 99% purity is sufficient for magnesium alloy and hydrogen storage research. 99.5% or 99.9% is recommended for superconducting materials and high-precision thin film studies.

Q: What is the lead time for a custom calcium target?

A: Standard discs (2"-6"): 1-2 weeks. Custom shapes: 2-3 weeks. All calcium targets require inert atmosphere processing, which is factored into the lead time.

Q: How should I store the target after opening the vacuum seal?

A: Once opened, install the target promptly. If you need to store it after opening, place it in a desiccator or vacuum desiccator with indicating desiccant. Do not store in ambient air for extended periods.
