FAQ

What purity levels are available for alumina plates?

We provide Al2O3 plates of differing purities. The most frequently requested are 95%, 97%, 99%, and 99.7%. Increased purity offers higher thermal, chemical, and electrical performance. Our technical group can help you select the optimal purity for your specific application.

Can alumina plates be machined to tight tolerances and complex shapes?

Yes, but with important considerations. Alumina is a very hard and brittle material, making it unsuitable for conventional machining in its fired state. Precision machining (grinding, lapping, laser cutting) must be performed by specialists with diamond tools. It is most cost-effective to design parts that leverage alumina’s ability to be net-shaped or near-net-shaped during the green (unfired) state. We strongly recommend consulting with our engineering team early in the design phase to optimize for manufacturability.

What temperature range can alumina plates withstand?

Alumina plates exhibit excellent long-term stability in oxidizing and inert atmospheres. Maximum continuous use temperature typically ranges from 1,500°C to 1,750°C, depending on the purity and specific formulation. Its thermal shock resistance is moderate—while it has a high melting point, its relatively low fracture toughness means rapid temperature changes should be managed. For extreme thermal cycling, zirconia or silicon nitride may be better options.

Do you offer custom sizes, thicknesses, and hole patterns?

Absolutely. As a manufacturer, customization is our strength. We can produce alumina plates in non-standard dimensions, with precise hole drilling, edge chamfering, and complex contours. Providing a detailed drawing is the best way to start. For prototypes or small batches, laser machining of fired blanks is an option. For larger production runs, custom tooling for green-state forming is more economical. Request a quote with your specifications.
